PETER Harte says he isn’t surprised Darragh Canavan has received his call up to the Tyrone senior panel and sees plenty to get excited about among the Red Hands’ next generation.

Harte is a club mate of Canavan the younger at Errigal Ciarán and has watched the development of the highly-rated minor star at first hand.

“I’m not really surprised, to be honest,” said Harte last night.

“Himself and another young lad Matthew Murnaghan [of Killyclogher] are both 18 like, we seen them playing against each other actually in the county minor final this year and the two of them stood out. They’re two great lads and two great players so, when you have the potential that those two boys have, they’re great to have on the panel.”

Harte has played alongside Canavan since his recent graduation to the Errigal Ciarán senior set-up and knows what he can bring to the county panel.

“He played the last few league games for us and I’ve played a bit with him in training and he’s got all the skill and potential to do it at county level, but we’ll just have to see how he develops now,” he added.

“He just adds to the competition. There’s a lot of boys there, the likes of Kyle Coney coming back in. There’s a lot of boy coming into the panel now that’ll want game time and the other boys are still there from last year, so he just adds to the competitive nature of the training and the squad.

“Everyone’s going to have to be champing at the bit to try to get a bit of football.”
