Greenfield Foods Monaghan SFC round 3B: Castleblayney v Magheracloone (Friday, Inniskeen, 8.15pm)

CASTLEBLAYNEY and Magheracloone meet on Friday evening  in the first of two round 3B qualifying games in Monaghan this weekend.

Last weekend, ’Blayney lost to Clontibret by two points after extra-time in an absolutely cracking contest, despite showing all their trademark battling qualities.

They were in a winning position on a couple of occasions but failed to convert vital chances in a game where opportunities were at a premium. That should add further impetus to their efforts this time around.

Magheracloone have shown similar qualities as they recovered from their defeat by Ballybay on August 26 to finish strongly last Saturday in Inniskeen to get over the challenge of Carrickmacross.

Michael Metzger, who wasn’t available for the game against Ballybay, returned to good effect last Saturday when his two points late on helped turn the tide.

Castleblayney will have to be aware of the threat that he poses, while they themselves will rely on Dermot Malone and Martin McElroy for scores

Magheracloone also have potential match-winners in the likes of Paudie McMahon, Allan Kieran, minor star Liam Og Murray (who won a minor league Division One medal on Wednesday night) and Alan McCahey, but they will have to be at their best to contain a resurgent Castleblayney who last won the senior championship in 2003.
