Newry boss Darren Mullen aiming for first top six point away to Cliftonville

BEATING all around them, 11 points clear of the relegation play-off place, Newry City should surely be delighted with their season so far in the Danske Bank Premiership?

"We've done OK," says manager Darren Mullen. Not just his verdict but that from a players' meeting earlier this week.

It's that attitude which will surely keep the border club comfortably in the top flight in their first campaign back up, even if they do go down to defeat away to high-flying Cliftonville this afternoon.

Mullen, who set an example by changing jobs after more than two decades in his previous role, is determined that Newry will not relax, despite beating every other team in the bottom half of the table so far:

"We're not getting carried away. Yes, it's been a decent enough start, but the minute you start believing that you're better than what you are, then that's when complacency and defeats set in.

"It's been fine, but there's still a lot of work to do and if we start settling and thinking, 'Okay, we've got a wee bit of a gap there, we're comfortable', that's when complacency sets in."

Newry actually led 2-0 at Solitude earlier this month but, inspired by two-goal Joe Gormley, the Reds roared back and Rory Hale scored the winner.

Taking something back down the road from north Belfast is Mullen's aim this afternoon, even though it's a squad depleted by injuries and suspension which will travel today.

The trip might appear a daunting one, as Newry lost 4-0 to Crusaders at nearby Seaview last weekend, following the early dismissal of Philip Donnelly.

City also lost 4-0 at Solitude at the start of October, and the Reds are on a seven-match unbeaten run, since their own 4-0 thrashing at Larne last month, which was their first league loss since the opening day of the campaign at Coleraine.

However, Mullen is targeting avoiding defeat at least, explaining: "We haven't taken any points off the top six. That's something that I'd like to fix, starting [at Solitude].

"We went to them in the [League] cup and were two up at half-time….we went and gave it a really good go.

"We understand how difficult it's going to be but we still have to have a game-plan to go and win it. If you set yourself up to try and get a draw, that's a fine line to tread. There has to be a game-plan to get a positive result.

"It's something we're working on, even though we're light on the ground at the minute - that's not a pre-made excuse, it's just where we're at because, between injuries and suspensions, I think we have seven missing."

Cliftonville are unbeaten at home this season, and have not conceded in their last three league games, including last weekend's win at the Oval; anything other than another home victory will be something of a surprise.

There's a huge match at Windsor Park this evening (5.30pm) as champions Linfield host Crusaders

Both have averaged exactly two points per game so far, but both need three today if they are to muscle their way into the title race. A draw would not be great for either side.

While the Crues are inconsistent, the Blues have quietly won five of their last six league outings, drawing the other, against Cliftonville.

Best of all, they beat leaders Larne in midweek, the 1-0 win at Windsor especially impressive for stopping the prolific visitors from scoring. Crusaders, like Larne, have 35 goals from their 16 league matches, but have conceded 20.

Elsewhere this afternoon, table-proppers Portadown host Glentoran, with the latter seeking to bounce back from last Sunday's home loss against Cliftonville.

Dungannon Swifts pushed Larne really hard last weekend but the Tyrone team needs to pick up more points, and have a chance at home to unpredictable Glenavon.

Ballymena United travel to Carrick Rangers, with both mired in mid-table mediocrity, although the east Antrim men have a better shot of making the top six than their county-parts from the north.
