Maher: Derry players not dwelling in Dundalk defeat

SSE Airticity League Premier Division: Sligo Rovers v Derry City (tonight, 7.45pm)

GOALKEEPER Brian Maher admitted Derry City players turned their attention to tomorrow night's game at Sligo Rovers in the changing room straight after Friday evening's loss to Dundalk.

The Brandywell men, who have only won twice in their last eight games and now sit seven points behind champions Shamrock Rovers, travel to the Showgrounds looking to get a positive result.

The Republic of Ireland U21 international conceded that all the talk after the Dundalk loss was all about the next game at Sligo.

"Everyone is already talking about Monday," he explained.

"Whenever you lose a game, all you want to do is play again.

"Our minds are already on recovering for Monday’s game and trying to put it right.

"It is difficult playing Friday-Monday, but it’s the same for everybody. We have got to go and play on Monday.

"It’s tough on the bodies, but if you do your recovery right; it’s nearly about who recovers the best who will be on top on Monday."

The Bit O'Red sacked manager Liam Buckley on Sunday and his assistant John Russell will take interim charge of the squad for tomorrow evening's game, but regardless who's in charge Maher feels it's going to a tough test for Derry.

"Sligo are never easy to play against. They have got really good players and it’s in their ground which is a difficult place to go," he added.

"We’ll just have to be at our best and we’ll have to do whatever it takes to win. It only takes one win and we you can put a run together again.

"There’s only two games until the break, and all we want to do now is put in two good performances and get two wins."

Ruaidhri Higgins should have the same squad to choose from, which finished the game against the Lilywhites on Friday, with trio Ciaron Harkin, Michael Duffy and Patrick McEleney all still on the treatment table.

Elsewhere tonight, leaders Rovers, will fancy there chances of securing their tenth league success in 11 games when they travel to Drogheda United.

Damien Duff's Shelbourne have hit a wee purple patch having won their last three games and they'll be confident of making if four wins on the bounce when they face bottom side UCD, at Tolka Park.

The game of the night in the Premier Division sees another Dublin derby take place at Richmond Park, as St Patrick's Athletic, who lost to Shels on Friday night, come up against Bohemians in a match that both sides know the three points would be very welcome.
