BACK IN THE DAY

The Irish News - Thursday March 18 2010:

AIB All-Ireland Club Senior Football Championship final: St Gall’s (Antrim) 0-13 Kilmurry-Ibrickane (Clare) 1-5

Arise St Gall’s – Champions of Ireland.

It may take some time for the enormity of what the Belfast club has achieved to sink in.

As team captain Colin Brady noted in his acceptance speech, yesterday’s success has been a long time in coming.

Referring to the fact that the club is celebrating its centenary year, he said: “This isn’t the result of one year’s work, this has taken 100 years.”

And St Gall’s deserve to enjoy the fruits of their victory because they have tasted the dark side of a St Patrick’s Day decider.

Paying tribute to the fallen losers, Brady told them: “We know how you feel.”

The ghosts of that 2006 defeat to Salthill/Knocknacarra were firmly laid to rest yesterday.

The only real surprise was the ease with which the Antrim champions secured this win.

Apart from their demolition of Loup in the Ulster final, this was probably the easiest game of a campaign that started with an extra-time victory over Cavan Gaels.

And when St Gall’s have time to reflect on their momentous season, they might well conclude that they already had one hand on the Andy Merrigan Cup after they beat Corofin in the extra-time thriller in Parnell Park.
