Bank of Ireland All-Ireland Minor Football Championship final: Croke Park: Down 1-14 Mayo 0-14

DOWN continued where Tyrone left off and brought the Tom Markham Cup back to Ulster after a thoroughly convincing display in the minor final.

It was the county’s first minor success since 1987 and followed on from the Red Hand county's victory 12 months ago.

A goal from midfielder Brendan Coulter towards the end of the first half sent Down on their way in a game they dominated although probably should have won a lot easier than they did.

Having built a commanding 1-13 to 0-9 lead with only 10 minutes remaining, the Mourne men seemed to lose concentration and not for the first time this summer, made life a little difficult for themselves.

Mayo pegged them back with four successive points which made for an uneasy finish for the sizeable Down support at Croke Park. However, the Down defence held out to secure a deserving victory and seal the county’s first All-Ireland title at this grade since 1987.

Sean Boylan’s boys bag another All-Ireland title

IF good managers win one All-Ireland and very good ones win two, Sean Boylan entered the realms of greatness yesterday with his fourth success in an incredible 17-year spell.

Small in stature he may be, but Meath’s very own High King joined Dubliner Kevin Heffernan in claiming the Sam Maguire four times and only the legendary Mick O’Dwyer has won more.

Captain Graham Geraghty kicked open the door of the dressing room carrying Sam and his daughter Sophie sitting inside decked out in Royal colours.

Boylan returned to the dressing room hands held high with Mattie Gilsenan, captain of the first Meath team to reach the senior final in 1939, a team which returned empty handed.

“Here yous go lads, this is where it all started, with Mattie and the boys of ‘39.”

Meath: C O’Sullivan; M O’Reilly, D Fay, C Murphy; P Reynolds, E McManus, H Traynor; N Crawford, J McDermott; N Nestor, T Giles (0-4), D Curtis (0-1); E Kelly (0-3), G Geraghty (capt, 0-3), O Murphy (1-0)

Subs: R Kealy for Nestor (55 mins), B Callaghan for Traynor (62), T Dowd for Kelly (70).

Cork: K O’Dwyer; R McCarthy, S Og O hAilpin, A Lynch; C O’Sullivan, O Sexton, Martin Cronin; N Murphy, Michael O’Sullivan; Michael Cronin, J Kavanagh (1-1), P O’Mahony (0-1); P Clifford (capt, 0-5), D Davis, Mark O’Sullivan (0-1)

Attendance: 63,276.
