1990: Twenty one Arsenal and Manchester United players were involved in a mass brawl which resulted in both clubs being fined £50,000. Arsenal were deducted two points and United one.

1996: Newcastle inflicted Manchester United's biggest defeat in 12 years, beating them 5-0 at St James' Park. But it was the Red Devils who went on to win the Premiership title with the Magpies finishing in second place.

2003: Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson was handed a two-match touchline ban and fined £10,000 by the Football Association following a verbal attack on referee Jeff Winter.

2004: Formula One's contract recognition board refused to ratify Jenson Button's move from BAR to Williams. He was forced to stay with BAR.

2006: Great Britain's Beth Tweddle won the gold medal in the uneven bars competition at the gymnastics World Championships in Aarhus, Denmark.

2007: Holders England lost the Rugby World Cup final 15-6 to South Africa in Paris.

2010: Wayne Rooney released a statement confirming he wanted to leave Manchester United. The England striker later reversed his decision.

2011: Stuart Pearce and Hope Powell were named by the Football Association as the coaches for the British men's and women's football teams at the 2012 Olympic Games.

2012: Ireland took an advantage into the second leg of their hurling-shinty international after a 2-10 to 2-9 win in Inverness.

 2013: Glenswilly claimed their second Donegal title in three years following a 3-19 to 2-6 final win over Killybegs.

2014: Keiron Cunningham was named the new head coach of Super League Grand Final winners St Helens, succeeding Nathan Brown.

2015: Virender Sehwag announced his retirement from international cricket.

2017: Carlisle's Shaun Miller became the first player in English football to be retrospectively banned for diving.
