Roberto Baggio (soccer) - Former FIFA World Player of the Year and Ballon d'Or winner, a striker who played for AC Milan, Juventus, Inter Milan and others, as well as Italy, born 1967.

Colin Jackson (athletics) - Former hurdler, who won two world championships and Olympic silver, born 1967.

Thomas Bjorn (golf) - First Dane to play in Ryder Cup, born 1971.

Claude Makelele (soccer) - Former Chelsea and France midfielder, currently head coach at Eupen, born 1973.

Yevgeny Kafelnikov (tennis) - Former Australian Open and French Open champion, born 1974.

ON THIS DAY 

1882: During England's record 13-0 win over Ireland, Oliver Vaughton (five goals) and Arthur Brown (four) became the first England footballers to score hat-tricks in a full international.

1898: Enzo Ferrari, who created the most successful grand prix team in history, was born. A driver with Alfa Romeo, he quit racing at the end of 1929 and started manufacturing cars under the Scuderia Ferrari banner. He died in 1988.

1933: The first officially recognised world heavyweight boxing champion under Queensberry Rules, 'Gentleman' Jim Corbett, died at the age of 66.

1933: Sir Bobby Robson was born. Following a playing career, he managed Ipswich to European success and also took charge of PSV Eindhoven and Barcelona after taking England to the 1990 World Cup semi-finals. His final job was as manager of hometown club Newcastle before he lost a long battle with cancer in July 2009.

2004: Tottenham defender Ledley King scored on his full England debut in a 1-1 draw with Portugal in Faro.

2009: The Football Association confirmed the appointment of Ian Watmore as chief executive.

2010: Wolves were handed a £25,000 suspended fine by the Premier League Board after fielding a weakened team for their fixture at Manchester United on December 15.

2012: Dereck Chisora lost his WBC heavyweight title fight against Vitali Klitschko on a unanimous points decision in Munich. The fight was followed by a brawl between Chisora and David Haye in the post-fight press conference.

2017: National League leaders Lincoln became the first non-League team to reach the FA Cup quarter-finals since 1914 with a 1-0 win at Premier League Burnley.
