GOWNA and Burren will have to do it all again – probably in a fortnight – after playing out an entertaining 1-9 apiece draw in this First Trust Ulster Club Football Championship tie at Newry.

Both teams had grounds for claiming that they should have won this one.

Gowna, after a couple of astute switches from Eamon Coleman, dominated the second period. But some profligacy in the second half in front of goal undermined the Cavan champions.

At the other end, John Shorty Treanor, spurned a gilt edged chance right at the death when driving a 40-yard free from the hand wide of the posts.

With 13 minutes left the impressive Jimmy McAlinden struck the equaliser and then following a 10-minute lull in scoring,

Shorty Treanor struck a free from the hand to put Burren ahead with time nearly up.

But Gowna refused to lie down and after Paddy Brady won a free on the 14-yard line Sean Tierson tapped over to take the game to a replay.

CASTLEBLAYNEY’S bravehearts weathered the storm in nerve-wracking fashion to deny Carrickmore 0-8 to 0-7 at Omagh yesterday, but they will be the first to admit that they were let off the hook in this Ulster Club Football Championship clash.

The Monaghan champions had enough opportunities to make the game safe midway through the second half but Carrickmore proved equally wasteful in a frantic finish which saw their search for a single equalising point yield nothing but a succession of agonising wides.

“We had a finish today that you wouldn’t want to have every week” said Eamon McEneaney.

“We won’t win an Ulster Club Championship playing the way we played today. When you get to this level you have to be taking your chances. “But it was a big performance from our defence. They can take all the plaudits today. Up front we created a lot of chances but couldn’t put them away.”

A SHANE King goal 58 minutes into Saturday’s All-Ireland B quarter-final, put paid to Antrim’s hopes of progressing to the last four.

King’s goal came as a result of a fine display of inter-passing from defence into attack by the Erne county men, who despite falling asleep for a 15-minute period in the second half, comfortably won by 1- 13 to 0-6.

While Fermanagh performed, Antrim faltered throughout, badly missing the accuracy of John McManus’s free taking. McManus, along with Aiden Donnelly and Chris Murphy, were missing from the Saffron side due to club championship duty with St Paul’s
