1895: The first US Open Golf Championship took place at Newport, Rhode Island. The winner was English-born Horace Rawlins with a total score of 173 from rounds of 91 and 82.

1989: Former England Test cricketer Norman Yardley died at the age of 74.

1991: Brian Clough's former right-hand man Peter Taylor died aged 62 while on holiday in Majorca. Taylor had worked with Clough at Hartlepool, Derby and Brighton before they ended their partnership.

2001: The Government scrapped plans to hold the World Athletics Championships in London in 2005.

2004: Manchester United's plc board confirmed they had received a "preliminary approach" regarding a "possible offer" for the company, thought to be from American tycoon Malcolm Glazer.

2010: Playing on a Monday for the first time in the competition's history because of earlier rain, Europe won the Ryder Cup by 14 1/2 points to 13 1/2, beating the United States after Graeme McDowell defeated Hunter Mahan in the final match.

2015: Two Premier League managers left their jobs. Brendan Rodgers was sacked by Liverpool, while Dick Advocaat resigned as manager of Sunderland.

2016: Maria Sharapova's two-year doping ban for testing positive for meldonium was reduced on appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport from two years to 15 months. Sharapova was eligible to play again after midnight on April 25, 2017.
