1920: One of England's best-known wicketkeepers, Godfrey Evans, was born. The Kent gloveman dismissed 219 batsmen in 91 Test matches and was the first to claim 200 Test victims. He died on May 3, 1999.

1948: Lester Piggott won his first horse race aged 12, riding The Chase to victory in the Wigan Lane Selling Handicap at Haydock.

1968: Down advanced to the All-Ireland SFC final after beating Galway 2-10 to 2-8. 

The Down footballers went on to beat Kerry in the 1968 All-Ireland final, and thus claim their third title of the decade, a feat matched by Galway. Sean O'Neill, who was named Texaco Footballer of the Year in 1968, scored 1-3 against Galway, and is regarded as one of the greatest ever players to grace the game. The Newry Mitchels clubman was named on the GAA's Football Team of the Century in 1984, and again on the Gaelic Football Team of the Millennium in 2000. 

1990: New Zealand's All Blacks suffered their first defeat for nearly four years, losing 21-9 to Australia in Wellington to end a run of 23 consecutive wins.

2008: Great Britain's cycling quartet of Paul Manning, Bradley Wiggins, Ed Clancy and Geraint Thomas won an Olympic gold medal in the men's team pursuit in a world record time of three minutes 53.314 seconds in Beijing.

2011: UK Athletics confirmed it would bid to host the 2017 World Athletics Championships in London. The city was chosen as host ahead of Doha in November 2011.

2013: Europe won the Solheim Cup on American soil for the first time with an 18-10 win over the United States.
