1987: Laura Davies became Britain's first winner of the US Women's Open, beating Joanne Carner and Ayako Okamoto in a play-off at Plainfield, New Jersey.

1990: Dennis Andries became the first British boxer to twice regain a world title, beating Jeff Harding in a world light-heavyweight fight in Melbourne.

1999: European 200 metres champion Dougie Walker was acquitted by the UK Athletics disciplinary panel investigating his failed drugs test in December 1998.

2003: Nasser Hussain stood down as England's Test cricket captain.

2006: Ruud van Nistelrooy completed his move to Real Madrid from Manchester United.

2008: Liverpool signed striker Robbie Keane from Tottenham. The Republic of Ireland international agreed a four-year contract but returned to White Hart Lane in January 2009 after a disappointing time on Merseyside.

2010: Newcastle signed former Tottenham, Arsenal and England defender Sol Campbell on a one-year deal.

2011: Manchester City confirmed the signing of Argentina striker Sergio Aguero from Atletico Madrid on a five-year contract.

2012: Former AC Milan and Chelsea striker Andriy Shevchenko announced his retirement from football. The Ukrainian would later stand for election to the Ukrainian Parliament, but his party failed to win parliamentary representation.

2015: Nottinghamshire announced that former South Africa captain Clive Rice had died at the age of 66.
