1905: Hull KR's George West scored a record 11 tries in a rugby league match against Brookland Rovers in the Northern Cup (now Challenge Cup).



1936: Scottish double-world motor racing champion Jim Clark was born in Fife. Winner of the title in 1963 and 1965, he was killed while racing at Hockenheim in Germany in 1968.



1967: Third Division QPR pulled off a shock 3-2 win over West Brom in the first League Cup final to be played at Wembley.

1973: Maynooth’s pursuit of a first Sigerson Cup came up just short as they lost to UCD in the final, 1-9 to 1-5.



1976: John Curry added to his Olympic gold medal by winning the men's title at the world figure-skating championships.



2002: Manchester City signed Preston striker Jon Macken for £5million.



2005: The Football Association announced plans to scrap fifth and sixth-round replays in the FA Cup for teams still involved in Europe, ideas which were later shelved.

2006: Derry’s good start to their Division 1B campaign continued as the Bradley brothers, Paddy and Eoin, helped them to a 0-11 to 0-9 win over Kildare at Celtic Park.

2007: The National Hurling League Division 1B clash between Antrim and Dublin was called off as the Casement Park pitch was deemed unplayable.



2010: An independent appeal committee dismissed Stade Francais prop David Attoub's appeal against a 70-week ban for gouging. The offence occurred in a Heineken Cup match against Ulster.

2011: UUJ recorded a 0-12 to 0-10 win NUI Maynooth to reach the Sigerson final against UCC.



2012: Andre Villas Boas left Chelsea, with Roberto Di Matteo appointed interim manager until the end of the season.



2013: The Danish Football Association announced it would not consider striker Nicklas Bendtner for international selection for six months after he was arrested for drink-driving.



2016: Jon Dibben won Great Britain's second gold of the Track Cycling World Championships with a sensational ride in the points race in London.
