1956: Galway defeated Cork 2-13 to 3-7 in the All-Ireland Football final, a match delayed due to an outbreak of polio in the Rebel county.



1993: Liam Brady resigned as manager of Celtic. His assistant Joe Jordan was put in temporary charge and Lou Macari was later named the new boss.



1995: Steve Coppell was confirmed as manager of First Division Manchester City, ending the club's six-week search for a successor to Alan Ball. Coppell lasted just 33 days before quitting.



2000: Kevin Keegan resigned as England coach after the 1-0 defeat by Germany in the final match to be played at the old Wembley stadium.



2000: After drawing the first day out, Galway and Kerry met in the All-Ireland final replay. It was the Kingdom men who prevailed on a 0-17 to 1-10 scoreline.



2003: Rio Ferdinand was omitted from the England squad to face Turkey in their crucial Euro 2004 qualifier after failing to attend a drugs test.



2006: England suffered humiliation at the hands of Macedonia for the second time in four years as they were held to a goalless draw in their European Championship qualifier at Old Trafford.



2007: Scotland lost 19-13 to Argentina in the quarter-finals of the Rugby World Cup in Paris.



2009: Avram Grant was appointed as the new director of football at Portsmouth. He went on to become manager but could not save the club from relegation.



2010: England's Rebecca Adlington won a swimming gold medal in the women's 800m freestyle final at the Commonwealth Games.



2012: Errigal Ciaran won their first Tyrone title in six years following a  0-13 to 0-8 victory over Dromore.



2014: Aviva Premiership side Wasps were given the green light for a �30million takeover of Coventry's Ricoh Arena.



2015: Bryan Habana equalled Jonah Lomu's World Cup try-scoring record as he led South Africa into the quarter-finals with a crushing 64-0 victory over the United States.
