On This Day - Sep 1 1962: towering Irish soccer striker Tony Cascarino is born

1866: Former world heavyweight boxing champion James J Corbett, known as 'Gentleman Jim', was born. He captured the title in 1892 by knocking out John L Sullivan in the 21st round. He made one successful defence before losing his crown to Bob Fitzsimmons in March 1897. Corbett died in 1933.

1923: Another world heavyweight champion, Rocky Marciano, was born. He took the title from 'Jersey Joe' Walcott in 1952. Marciano was undefeated in all his 49 professional fights and won 43 of those inside the distance. He retired in 1956 and died in a plane crash in 1969.

1991: Roger Black, Derek Redmond, John Regis and Kriss Akabusi pipped their American counterparts to win the 4x400metres relay at the World Championships in Tokyo.

2001: Michael Owen's hat-trick helped England to a 5-1 win against Germany in Munich. Steven Gerrard and Emile Heskey scored the other goals in the World Cup qualifier.

2004: Premier League referee Andy D'Urso was suspended for 28 days after failing to send off Blackburn midfielder Barry Ferguson despite showing him two yellow cards.

2006: England left-back Ashley Cole's move to Chelsea from Arsenal was confirmed, with William Gallas moving in the opposite direction.

2007: Tim Henman lost to Frenchman Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in the second round of the US Open, bringing his grand slam career to an end.

2008: Abu Dhabi United Group for Development and Investment successfully completed the purchase of Manchester City, breaking the British transfer record to buy Robinho from Real Madrid on the same day.

2011: Britain's Dai Greene won gold in the men's 400m hurdles at the World Championships in Daegu, while Hannah England claimed silver in the women's 1500m.

2013: Gareth Bale completed his move from Tottenham to Real Madrid for a world record 100million euros (£85.3million).

2015: Manchester United signed teenage striker Anthony Martial from Monaco on a four-year deal in one of the biggest moves of transfer deadline day.

Kirani James (athletics) - Grenada's 2012 Olympic 400m champion, born 1992.
