PJ O’Mullan has sensationally quit the Antrim senior hurling manager’s job due to “personal circumstances” less than five months after being appointed.

O’Mullan could not be contacted today, while the Antrim County Board released the following statement.

“At a meeting earlier today in the offices of Antrim GAA the current senior hurling manager, PJ O’Mullan, has decided to step down from his post due to personal circumstances,” read the statement.

“PJ would like to thank the backroom team and the county board for their support and assistance during his time in charge. The county board would like to thank PJ and his backroom team for their efforts and wish PJ the best of luck for the future.”

The statement continued: “Antrim GAA will meet to consider its options regarding the management of the team for the upcoming Christy Ring campaign.”

The Antrim hurlers endured a wretched NHL Division 2A campaign losing to Westmeath, Carlow and London and only managed to record wins over Kildare and Derry.

After losing at home to Carlow, O'Mullan shouldered much of the blame for the end of their promotion prospects.

"I’ll make no bones about it, our season has been a failure," said the Loughgiel Shamrocks clubman. "I’m there to lead it; I’ll put my hands up. Nobody feels this pain more than I do.

“Maybe some of the players need to feel the pain as much as we’re doing. It’s hurting.”

Now managerless, the Saffrons are scheduled to face Kildare in their Christy Ring opener on April 23.
