Thomas has contributed to the success of the Irish News sports section for many years through his roles as the paper's amateur boxing correspondent, freelance and staff sub-editing duties.

Took over the Sports Editor post in August 2000 and has successfully overseen the growth of the sports section and many changes to both format, design and content.

He has assisted in the smooth transition of the Irish News from a traditional broadsheet newspaper, through the introduction of the condensed Berliner-style paper to the present-day, popular compact format. He has led an award-winning reporting and sub-editing team during this time and is now looking ahead with confidence to developing the sports section even further.

In conjunction with The Irish News online / digital team and using the very latest media technology, he aims to highlight and promote the depth and quality of the sports section.
In so doing, Thomas and his sports desk team will play an integral role in helping to create a whole new generation of readers, and add an exciting chapter into the rich history of the success of The Irish News.
