1902: Former England cricket captain Gubby Allen was born in Australia. The fast bowler was three months short of his 46th birthday when he played his 25th and last Test match in the West Indies in 1948. He died in 1989.
1956: Jim Laker took his 19th Australian wicket for 90 runs in a remarkable bowling feat at Old Trafford. He had taken nine for 37 in the first innings and all 10 for 53 in the second. England won the Test by an innings and 170 runs.
1996: Nigeria came from 3-1 down to beat Brazil 4-3 with a golden goal in the Olympic football semi-finals in Atlanta. They went on to beat Argentina 3-2 in the final.
2004: British boxer Danny Williams knocked out Mike Tyson in round four to win a heavyweight fight in Louisville.
2006: Manchester United announced the signing of midfielder Michael Carrick from Tottenham.
2008: The Football Association charged Joey Barton with violent conduct for his training ground assault on former Manchester City team-mate Ousmane Dabo in May 2007.
2009: Former England and Newcastle manager Sir Bobby Robson died aged 76. Robson, who had been fighting cancer for several years, played for Fulham and West Brom and also managed Fulham, Ipswich, PSV Eindhoven, Sporting Lisbon, Porto and Barcelona.
2012: Britain's Tina Cook, William Fox-Pitt, Mary King, Zara Phillips and Nicola Wilson won an eventing team silver medal at London 2012.
2015: Ian Bell scored 65 not out as England secured an eight-wicket victory against Australia in the third Ashes Test at Edgbaston to take a 2-1 lead in the five-match series.
2015: Beijing won the vote to host the 2022 Winter Olympics despite having no natural snow.
