Tragedy brings home changes to Portadown's Mourneview Street
I lived in Mourneview Street, Portadown, for two years in the mid-1990s.
The body found in a stream there this weekend is of a Lithuanian man, Eimantas Gerdvilas, from another part of town - but the street and its surrounding Annagh neighbourhood are the epicentre of Portadown’s migrant worker population. The Catholic primary school, seemingly doomed 20 years ago, has five times the enrolment today due to the highest proportion of ‘newcomer’ children in Northern Ireland.
