Budget cuts hit Mitchell scholarship scheme
Severe budget cuts have hit a prestigious scholarship scheme named after the architect of the Good Friday Agreement. The Department for Employment and Learning (DEL) will stop funding the George J Mitchell programme, which brought students from the US to the north. Run by the US-Ireland Alliance and named after the US senator who brokered the agreement in 1998, it enabled up to four young people to spend a year of postgraduate study at Queen's University or Ulster University.
