AN ENGLISH bed company is quoting customers in Northern Ireland almost £100 million for delivery.

Divan-beds.co.uk said it had set the astonishing price to make it “more clear” that it does not ship outside Britain.

The company’s website promises free delivery within the UK.

However, a customer in Belfast who tried to buy a bed over the weekend was quoted £9,500 for delivery.

When contacted by The Irish News, the company said it does not “deliver to any offshore locations”.

It said it has now increased delivery charges to make it clear that it does not deliver outside Britain.

An attempt to get a mattress delivered to a Belfast address yesterday generated a quote of £99,999,999.00 for delivery.

The company said it had “increased the amounts on delivery to those locations to a large amount so customers cannot proceed with the order”.

Brexit has prompted several companies to either stop or pause deliveries to Northern Ireland or to increase shipping charges.

The Consumer Council has advised online shoppers to ask sellers if they can send items via Royal Mail which charges a uniform tariff to post across the UK.
