Thoughts and prayers with Sean Cox

Sean Cox, a father of three from Dunboyne in Co Meath, suffered catastrophic head injuries when he was the victim of an unprovoked attack by Italian football supporters outside Liverpool FC’s ground while attending a Champions League game almost a year ago.

Police deserve considerable credit for the major investigation which led to the arrest and eventual jailing of three Roma FC followers on related charges, with, as we reported yesterday, a sentence of three and a half years handed to a 30-year-old man in the final case.

Justice has been done, and the outcome of the legal process sends out a strong message about the consequences of getting involved in violent confrontations at soccer matches.

However, the thoughts and prayers of all true sports fans will be with 53-year-old Mr Cox and his family as he faces a slow and uncertain recovery process at the National Rehabilitation Hospital in Dún Laoghaire.
