The level of brutality involved in the latest paramilitary-style attack in Derry, which left a man in his 30s with what were described as `life-changing' injuries, was nothing short of appalling.
A gang believed to be from a dissident republican group burst into the victim's home at Rinmore Drive in the Creggan estate at the weekend, and not only shot him several times but also beat him with iron bars.
It was the second outrage of its kind in the city within three days, after another man was viciously targeted in the Ballymagroarty area, and there will be a widespread fear that other violent assaults could follow.
The perpetrators have no interest in any form of human rights and are pursuing methods which have consistently failed in the past. They deserve to be brought to justice before they kill someone.
