No place in society for guns

BY ANY standard the firing of a what is believed to have been a shotgun into a large crowd of people in Manchester on Saturday night was an unbelievably reckless act.

Ten people, including a 12-year-old, were injured but thankfully none of the wounds incurred are thought to be life threatening.

A lot of attention is paid to America, its culture of gun crime and the fact that citizens can purchase lethal weapons relatively easily thanks to protections in the country's constitution.

This shooting is a timely reminder that gun crime is a problem in many countries, including Ireland and Great Britain.

We should do all we can to help the authorities take these weapons out of the hands of criminals and help to save lives.
