Alarm over Derry shooting

The incident in which shots were fired at a motorist after his car was rammed by another vehicle in the Waterside area of Derry yesterday was deeply alarming.

It was very fortunate that the victim, who is also believed to have been targeted in a petrol bombing on his home just weeks ago, was able to escape by driving from the scene in the Sevenoaks district to a nearby police station.

The PSNI has not speculated about the motive, although it will have been noted that a silver Peugeot thought to have been used in yesterday's attack was found burnt out in the loyalist Lincoln Court estate.

Indications that paramilitary groups of any description are stepping up activities in Derry must be treated with the utmost seriousness by the authorities.
