Derry Girls head for the top
When it emerged that Channel 4 was planning a new entertainment show called Derry Girls, based on the lives of a group of teenage girls in the city at the height of the Troubles, the prospects did not seem particularly good.
However, as the initial run of six episodes came to an end last night to rave reviews, it was confirmed to be the most successful comedy launch from the station in over five years and a second series has already been commissioned.
A combination of sharp writing from Lisa McGee and inspired performances from a range of young actors has proved to be a huge hit with viewers on both sides of the Irish Sea, even allowing for the colourful language featuring on a regular basis.
What Derry Girls has demonstrated is that talent, even in slightly unlikely circumstances, is always capable of rising to the top.
