Welcome for links between PSNI and Garda

The appointment of a former PSNI officer to a senior Garda post reflects well on both services and should make a positive contribution to progress in policing structures across Ireland.

Taoiseach Leo Varadkar has confirmed that the recruitment is at the rank of superintendent, although the identify of the successful candidate has yet to be released.

It is believed to be only the second occasion since the PSNI was formed in 2001 that a past or present member has crossed the border to take up a leadership role with the Garda.

However, transfers between the two neighbouring institutions will bring a range of benefits and deserve to be encouraged in both directions and at all levels.
