Anger over Clonard Monastery vandalism

There was a time when Clonard Monastery, a revered institution which holds a unique status in west Belfast and beyond, was in regular danger of attack from loyalist extremists.

It is appalling that, after playing a crucial role in the search for peace and reconciliation down the years, it is now under growing threat from young thugs in the area who are motivated by vandalism rather than sectarianism.

Six original windows in the listed building, dating back to 1896, have been smashed in the last three weeks, as we report today, with a range of other property in the surrounding grounds also targeted.

The perpetrators are believed to be in their early teens, or even younger, and they and their families need to realise the serious legal consequences which will follow if they persist in their activities.
