Alarm over bonfire material

While problems over bonfires are not entirely confined to one section of the community, there can only be considerable alarm over the material which has been illegally dumped for burning in a loyalist area of west Belfast.

It is verging on the astonishing that asbestos could be casually abandoned in such circumstances, while household waste, including out of date meat and soiled nappies, has also been recovered from the site beside the Lanark Way interface.

In the past, some unionist politicians have been very reluctant to accept that environmental issues of any kind had to be taken into consideration by the organisers of Eleventh Night celebrations.

It is encouraging that, as we report today, at least one DUP representative has expressed concern over developments at Lanark Way and has made it clear that the fly-tipping of what are plainly dangerous substances is not acceptable.
