Vermont senator Bernie Sanders has announced his bid for the Democratic nomination for president in 2020.

The 77-year-old, who finished as runner-up to Hillary Clinton in the 2016 Democratcic primary, has become known for focusing on issues around inequality, healthcare and has frequently criticised policies which help "millionaires and billionaires" instead of those in poverty.

His campaign during the last presidential election benefitted from a surge in support from young and first-time voters.

Mr Sanders has reshaped Democratic politics and earned a loyal following with his passionate defence of liberal proposals, including free college tuition.

But he will face off against several other Democratic candidates who also want to appeal to the party's base.

However, Mr Sanders's name recognition, fundraising prowess and passion for liberal policies make him a top-tier 2020 presidential contender.
