TWO nuns have been murdered in Mississippi, police in the US said.

Durant Assistant Police Chief James Lee said the nuns were nurses. An officer found them at their home yesterday after they did not report to work as usual.

Mississippi Department of Public Safety spokesman Warren Strain said it appears the nuns were murdered.

He did not release a motive and it was not clear if their religious work had anything to do with the killings.

The assistant police chief said it was too early to say how the nuns died, but it appears they were not shot.

One was a member of the Sisters of Charity of Nazareth in Kentucky.

The other was part of the School Sisters of St Francis in Milwaukee.
