Man dies after being hit by truck in Co Galway

A man has died after being struck by a truck after leaving his vehicle following a separate crash in Co Galway.

At approximately 5am on Wednesday, the man aged in his 50s left his vehicle after a crash on the M6 near Athenry.

Gardai said no other vehicle was involved in the original crash.

After exiting his vehicle, the man was fatally injured when he was then struck by a lorry.

His body has been removed from the scene to University Hospital Galway where a post-mortem examination was due to take place.

The male driver of the lorry, also aged in his 50s, was uninjured.

The road was closed for a forensic examination by gardai with local diversions in place.

Gardai are appealing to anyone who may have witnessed this collision to contact them.
