FORMER Dublin footballer Jason Sherlock was pulled from the crowds at the New York St Patrick's Day parade by Gardaí wanting to pose for selfies with the GAA star.

The All-Ireland winner Jason Sherlock (47) was hoisted aloft by officers taking part in the annual event on Friday.

Video footage shows Sherlock being lifted over the barrier by Gardaí who had stopped to ask him for a photograph.

It came as Gardaí, who were invited Stateside to join the parade, spotted the Dublin legend watching from the side of the street.

Posing for a few selfies with some of the officers, Sherlock is seen smiling and shaking hands with other Gardai as they passed by. Asked to join them in the parade, he initially declines, but is then lifted over a barrier and onto the street amid chants of 'Jayo, Jayo'.

He is then seen joining the march along the New York street with a member of the crowd watching the action unfold heard saying "that's awesome".

Other spectators are understood to have asked who he was, before an Irish voice comments: "He’s a famous footballer in Ireland".

Gardaí posted the footage on Twitter and said "our members are never off duty".

"An Garda Síochána’s contingent that travelled to NYC to proudly take part in today’s parade scooped out well known @officialgaa star, @boomjayo in the crowd," the post read.

"He’s now been taken in for questioning on his crimes against football."

Sherlock, who had a 15-year playing career with Dublin, responded to the video and posted a photograph of him wearing a Gardaí hat.
