Man arrested over John Brogan murder in Co Mayo to appear in court

A man arrested over the murder of John Brogan (83) in Co Mayo at the weekend has been charged and is due to appear before the courts on Tuesday.

The suspect, who is in his 60s and due to appear before Castlebar District Court, was arrested on Sunday after the discovery of the remains of Mr Brogan in his home in Castlebar.

The pensioner was found shot to death in his home following a fire at the property.

Emergency services had arrived at the house after a report of a fire, and discovered his body as the blaze was extinguished.

It is understood Mr Brogan had been shot several times, and his body was removed for a post-mortem.

An examination of the scene got underway on Monday by members of the Garda Technical Bureau.

The retired farmer had lived at the property all of his life with his brother, who had died several years ago.

Fine Gael councillor Cyril Burke said the Castlebar area was in "total shock" adding: "You don’t expect to hear this type of thing in a rural community."
