FORMER Ireland and Celtic striker Anthony Stokes has been arrested for the second time this month after allegedly being pursued by gardaí.

As reported by the Irish Independent, the ex-Premier League player was arrested around 3am on Tuesday in south Dublin.

It emerged that a Volkswagen Golf R had failed to stop for police at the M50 southbound close to Cabinteely before officers started a pursuit.

Around 20 minutes later, the vehicle was found abandoned at a housing estate near Loughlinstown.

After searching the area, Mr Stokes (34) was arrested a short distance away and detained at Dundrum Garda station.

A garda spokesperson said: "Gardaí have arrested and charged a man in his 30s following an incident of dangerous driving in the Cabinteely area of Dublin.

"He is due to appear before Dun Laoghaire District court at a later date."

This is now the second time this month that Mr Stokes was arrested for allegedly being behind the wheel of a car which failed to stop for police.

On January 6, he had been arrested in the early hours after a Dublin pursuit between Crumlim and Chapelizod, where it is reported he drove dangerously and failed to stop at red traffic lights.

At the time, more than €4,000 worth of cocaine was found in the glovebox of the vehicle and Mr Stokes was arrested on suspicion of drug and road traffic offences.

Another man in the car at the time, with an address in Dublin 14, was also charged and both men are due to appear before Dublin district court.
