The family of Aslan singer Christy Dignam have suffered another blow after the singer’s 27-year-old nephew passed away.
Christopher Dignam Healy died suddenly in hospital.
On social media Christy’s daughter Kiera wrote beside her cousin's rip.ie death notice: “My little cousin. What a cruel world.”
Christopher Dignam Healy's death notice reads: “The death has occurred of Christopher (Chris) Dignam Healy. Suddenly but peacefully at the Mater Hospital (aged 27 years) surrounded by his loving family. Loving father of Ellie Grace and Frankie, beloved son of Therese Dignam and Ed Healy, cherished brother of Ellen and Eric and dear uncle to Penny. Sharing in grief, sorrow and loss are his aunts, uncles, cousins, extended family, friends and all who knew and loved him.”
Just over two weeks ago, Christy’s family revealed he was receiving palliative care.
The Dublin rocker, who formed Aslan with fellow founding members in 1982, was diagnosed with amyloidosis in 2013.
The rare blood disorder is treated with chemotherapy, and the singer began treatment in 2017.
Last July the 62-year-old, who has had a series of Irish number one albums, was admitted to a Dublin hospital for further care, where he remained until last month.
In a statement, his family, including wife Kathryn and daughter Kiera, said they wished to update fans on his condition following a "large number" of enquiries about his health.
They said he had been treated by the haematology and cardiac care team at Dublin's Beaumont Hospital during his stay.
"Since December, Christy has been at home and is being cared for lovingly by family, with the support of a palliative care team," they said.
"The Dignam family thanks everyone for keeping Christy in their thoughts and prayers and asks for privacy at this time."
His fellow Aslan band members said in a statement that the singer's health was a "priority" for them.
"It has been a tough road for all of us but most of all Christy," the statement, which was posted yesterday to the group's Facebook account read.
"There are no words to describe how we are all feeling with the update that has been shared by Christy’s family. As we all know, Christy will always keep up the fight, and never gives up."
The band said future gigs would be cancelled as without Christy "performing will not be possible".
They added of messages of support from fans: "Thank you all for just being you! You are the most sincere and loyal fans and we know how lucky we are to have you all."
