ATTENDEES of a public meeting in Co Galway in which cow dung was thrown at two politicians have been urged to come forward to Gardaí.

The incident happened at a hotel in Gort last Wednesday, January 4, during a public meeting about a controversial planning decision by An Bord Pleanala to greenlight a biomass plant close to the town's centre.

It was reported that during the meeting, Minister of State Anne Rabbitte and Galway East Fine Gael TD Ciaran Cannon had cow dung contained in plastic bags thrown at them.

The incident has been widely condemned, including by the Republic's justice minister Simon Harris, who said it went against the "great strength" of "accessibility to public representatives".

A Gardaí spokesperson said they were continuing to investigate circumstances" around the "public order incident", saying officers were "appealing to any person who was at this meeting and who has not already spoken to Gardaí, to come forward".

They added: "Any other person who may have any other information in relation this incident should also make contact with Gardaí."
