GARDAÍ investigating the fatal car fire in Co Westmeath that claimed the lives of two children earlier this month have arrested a woman in her 40s.

Thelma Dennany, aged five, and her two-year-old brother Mikey, died following the blaze close on a rural road close to the Multyfarnham area on September 9.

Their mother, Lynn Egar, was taken to hospital in Dublin for treatment to non-life threatening injuries.

Yesterday a garda spokesperson said a woman in her 40s was arrested by detectives from Mullingar and detained under section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act.

She remained there last night and can be held for up to 24 hours before being released or charged.
