A YOUNG girl, who was born just weeks after her dad was killed in a construction site accident, has died in a drowning tragedy in Majorca.

Grace Mary Sweeney (7) from Co Donegal died in hospital two days after she was rescued from a swimming pool by lifeguards.

Spanish police said the youngster was rushed to hospital in a critical condition last Monday. Her funeral will take place in Creeslough today.

The tragedy is the second to strike the family in recent years. Grace’s father, John Sweeney, who was from Donegal but had been living in Co Antrim, died in a construction site accident in Cornwall in 2015. A native of Dunfanaghy, where his family now lives, Mr Sweeney (45) was living in Glenariffe with his wife Geraldine and daughter Cara (two) when he travelled to Cornwall for work.

He was fatally injured when a dumper truck he was driving overturned.

A spokeswoman for Spanish emergency services said they received a report that lifeguards saw Grace lying motionless at the bottom of the pool at a hotel in the Cales de Mallorca area.

After rescuing her, they performed CPR until an ambulance crew arrived. Paramedics managed to get Grace breathing again in the back of the ambulance and she was rushed to hospital where she later died.
