A NEW sculpture has been unveiled in west Donegal in memory of children and teenagers who have died through disease or tragedy.

Suaimhneas (peace) was unveiled at Gweedore Business Park. It was designed by Buncrana sculptor, John McCarron.

Situated in the business facility’s `Páirc an Phobail', supporters hope the statue will become a focus for quiet reflection and commemoration.

It is the second major project completed by Mr McCarron in recent months. Earlier this year, his Tower of Silence, commemorating victims of the Famine was unveiled in Glasgow.

He is also understood to be working on a sculpture to complement the well-known Bád Eddie ship at Magheraclogher Beach in Gweedore which has fallen into disrepair.

Bád Eddie reached an international audience in 1986 when it featured on music video for the In a Lifetime hit by U2 and west Donegal’s Clannad.

Mr McCarron designed Suaimhneas to commemorate children and young people who had died in the peak of their youth.
