Cork singer dies after being struck by van in car park

A 75-year-old man knocked down in the car park of a sports ground in Cork City on Saturday has been named as musician, poet and author Pete Newman.

Better known as Pete Duffy, he died at the scene after he was struck by a van at College Corinthians AFC’s grounds in Donnybrook, Douglas shortly after 3.30pm.

The driver of the vehicle, who had just dropped off son at the ground, was reported to have been left shaken by the incident.

Musician Ger O'Sullivan told RTE that the Cork man was "a very talented songwriter, poet and storyteller."

"His music and positivity will be sadly missed. He lived many lives in his life. He made us all smile,” he said.

Soccer team College Corinthians also paid tribute to Mr Newman saying he was "loved and respected" by all there.
