FIANNA Fáil councillor Tom Brabazon was last night named the new lord mayor of Dublin.

He replaces Paul McAuliffe, who was elected a TD earlier this month.

A special meeting of Dublin City Council was held to replace the members who were elected to the Dáil during this month's general election.

Mr Brabazon received 34 votes, which included members of his own party and councillors from the Green Party, Labour and the Social Democrats under the 'Dublin Agreement', which saw them come together to form a council majority after local authority elections last year.

Anthony Flynn, an independent councillor and director of Inner City Helping Homeless, won 26 votes.

Mr Brabazon, who served as deputy lord mayor to Mr McAuliffe, said it was a "great privilege and an honour".

The council was forced to apologise earlier yesterday after mistakenly announcing the new lord mayor before the election had taken place.

In a statement, it said independent councillor Anthony Flynn had been elected but a short time later stated this was "a test that was sent out in error, while drafts were being compiled on a number of different elected members".

"Apologies for any inconvenience caused," it added.
