AN Irish Coastguard helicopter was called in to help in the emergency operation after a man died in a single-vehicle accident on the main Derry to Moville road.

It is understood the man, who was in his 30s, died when his Volkswagen Golf left the road at Three Trees, Quigley’s Point and ended up on the shore of Lough Foyle.

A Garda spokesman said the accident happened around 4am yesterday.

An Irish Coastguard helicopter was dispatched to assist gardaí in a follow-up operation.

The spokesman said: “A male driver, aged in his mid-30s, was pronounced dead at the scene. His body was removed to the mortuary at Letterkenny University Hospital for a post mortem examination.”

The main road remained closed for most of yesterday as Garda forensic collision investigators carried out an inspection of the scene.

Gardaí have appealed to anyone who witnessed the accident to come forward. They are particularly keen to speak to anyone with camera footage who was travelling on the main Derry to Moville road between 3am and 4.30am to contact officers at Buncrana Garda station.
