PRESENTER Gloria Hunniford was in Dublin yesterday to accept an award in recognition of her career and achievements.

Ms Hunniford (79), who is originally from Portadown, was chosen by Woman's Way magazine readers to receive the Icon 2019 Award.

The veteran TV and radio presenter began her career in Belfast in the 1970s and currently co-hosts Rip Off Britain as well as being a panellist on Loose Women.

She said earlier this month she has no intention of retiring.

This was the 16th year of the The Woman’s Way & Beko Mum of the Year Awards which celebrate the evolving role of Irish mothers and highlight their contribution across society.

Co Meath woman Martina Cox, whose husband Sean was attacked outside Anfield before a 2018 Champions League game and suffered life-changing head injuries, accepted the Courage 2019 Award on behalf of her family.

She was recognised for her strength of character throughout her husband’s intensive medical treatment and continuing rehabilitation.

Norah Casey, chairperson of the judging panel, said: “The true heroes of our society are the mums who hold family and community together, who care for their loved ones, old and young, despite the enormous obstacles life throws at them."
