Garda watchdog to investigate man's death in Mullingar

A GARDA watchdog is to investigate the circumstances surrounding the death of a man arrested following an incident at a Co Westmeath hospital.

Danny McCormack was held after gardaí were called to Midland Regional Hospital in Mullingar on Saturday.

The father-of-three died later after collapsing at his home following release from custody.

It is understood preliminary post-mortem results suggest he died from heart failure.

Mr McCormack's family, who have expressed concern about the circumstances, said he went to hospital complaining of chest pains.

He was involved in an incident and security staff and gardaí were called to remove him.

Mr McCormack later returned home where his family said he was bleeding and distressed.

He collapsed and later died in hospital.

His death has been referred to the Garda Síochána Ombudsman Commission for investigation.
