A school has paid tribute to a teenager killed in a road crash in Co Carlow, in which four others were injured.

The car being driven by Eamon Kavanagh (16) struck a wall near `The Nine Stones' at Mount Leinster in Borris in the early hours of Sunday.

The alarm was raised by one of the passengers, but the Myshall youth, a third-year student at Borris Vocational School, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The school said he was a “very popular third-year student and will be greatly missed by all who knew him”.

"This is a terrible tragedy for the family, our school and our community," it said.

The victim was reported to be the son of a couple convicted last week in a high-profile animal cruelty case.

Four horses and 20 dogs had to be euthanised after a rescue operation by ISPCA.

Licensed dog breeder Jim Kavanagh (48), from Raheenleigh, Myshall, pleaded guilty to 30 charges of animal cruelty in relation to dogs and horses and was jailed for three years and banned from being involved with canines or equines for the rest of his life.

Jenny Kavanagh, who pleaded guilty to 30 charges of permitting animal cruelty, was given a 12-month suspended sentence and banned from having dogs for 15 years.

Gardai are investigating the cause of the crash.

Meanwhile, officers are investigating after a motorcyclist in his 50s died in a crash on the M50 in Dublin.

The single-vehicle collision happened shortly after 10am yesterday close to the north bore of the Port Tunnel.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene.
