AN inquest has heard of desperate attempts to save two teenage boys who drowned in a quarry in Co Clare.

Jack Kenneally and Shay Moloney, who were both 15, got into trouble last May when they went swimming in the disused quarry at Knockaneen near Ennis.

The boys and three friends had been swimming towards an island at the centre but Jack got into trouble half way over, swinging his arms and shouting for help.

One of his friends swam to him and tried to hold him up.

Shay Moloney then went under the water and another friend attempted to help him.

Another teenager, who was at the quarry but was not part of the group, also made attempts to reach the boys but the water was too cloudy.

The boys were taken from the water and paramedics performed CPR but they were later pronounced dead.

The inquest confirmed that the friends suffered accidental deaths due to drowning.
