Former Donegal All-Ireland winning footballer, Donal Reid has been hailed a hero after he saved a woman whose coat caught fire from a candle during Mass.

Mr Reid (57) was one of the stars of the Donegal team which won the county’s first All-Ireland senior title in 1992.

The former player was attending Mass at St Patrick’s church in Killygordon when he saw flames coming from a woman’s coat. He managed to beat out the flames before they took a proper hold of the woman’s clothes.

Mr Reid suffered minor burns to his hands while the elderly woman escaped without any injury.

The former inter-county footballer said he had to act quickly after realising the woman’s coat had caught fire from a church candle. Playing down the incident, Mr Reid said he was in the right place at the right time.
