Irish citizen captured in Syria by anti- Isis militias `known to Gardai'
A 45-year-old Irish citizen has reportedly been captured in Syria by militias fighting against ISIS.
RTÉ said last night the information had been confirmed by "Garda sources" and said the man "is the holder of an Irish passport".
The man is understood to have lived and worked in the Republic for "a number of years" before leaving with his family in 2013 to go to the Middle East.
According to RTÉ, "Gardaí say the man was known to them in the context of the monitoring of individuals sympathetic to radical causes".
A spokeswoman for the Republic's Department of Foreign Affairs said no requests for consular assistance have been made on behalf of an Irish citizen captured in Syria.
