TAOISEACH Leo Varadkar has confirmed the appointment of a former PSNI officer to a senior post in An Garda Síochána.

In a tweet earlier this week, the Fine Gael leader said: “Confirmed today in the Dáil that a former PSNI officer will be appointed to the rank of superintendent in the Gardai”.

The identity or former role of the successful candidate has not been revealed.

A spokesman for the Policing Authority in the Republic last night said: “The authority are in the practice of making an announcement once an appointment has been carried out.

“Currently this appointment is subject to government approval until such time details will not be released."

The officer is not the first former PSNI member to be appointed to a senior Garda role.

In 2015 former PSNI Detective Inspector Michael Daly was also appointed to the post of superintendent.

In July this year Mr Daly was promoted to the role of chief superintendent.
